Tropical Storm Tammy Forms in Atlantic Basin, Threatens Northern Leeward Islands
In the latest update from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), it has been reported that Tropical Storm Tammy has formed in the Atlantic Basin. The storm is currently situated less than 600 miles east of the Lesser Antilles, a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea. As Tammy continues to develop, it is expected to gradually turn west-northwest and could potentially pose a threat to the northern Leeward Islands.
With maximum sustained winds reaching approximately 40 mph, Tammy is considered a relatively weak tropical storm at the moment. However, forecasters anticipate some strengthening in the next 48 hours. In response to these developments, tropical storm watches have been issued for several areas in the Northern Antilles, including Barbados, Dominica, Martinique, and Guadeloupe.
Fortunately, experts do not expect Tammy to escalate into a hurricane before impacting the Lesser Antilles. It is worth noting that the United States Virgin Islands have also been included in the storm’s forecast cone, as Tammy is predicted to veer more northerly over the approaching weekend. This could potentially expose the U.S. Virgin Islands to the storm’s effects.
While passing through the northern Caribbean islands, Tammy could enter a period of strengthening, and there is a possibility that it may attain hurricane status during this time. Weather conditions in the region, specifically the unusually warm water temperatures, are believed to contribute to the storm’s development.
As we near the end of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, it’s interesting to observe that there are only two names remaining on the storm list after Tammy. This prompts the consideration of a supplemental list of names if all names designated for this season are used up. The Atlantic hurricane season generally spans from June 1 to November 30, and Tammy serves as a reminder that storms can form at any point within this timeframe.
