A new limited series on Hulu is set to bring attention to the tragic murder of 14-year-old Reena Virk in 1997 in Victoria, British Columbia. Inspired by Rebecca Godfrey’s 2005 book, “Under the Bridge,” the series delves into the heartbreaking story of how Virk was brutally beaten and drowned by a group of teenagers after enduring relentless bullying for her weight, appearance, and religion.
Starring Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough, the series follows Godfrey’s investigation into Virk’s murder, shining a light on the events that led to her death. Six girls involved in the initial assault were convicted of assault causing bodily harm, while Warren Glowatski and Kelly Ellard were tried and convicted of second-degree murder.
Glowatski was released on full parole in 2010 after undergoing rehabilitation and receiving forgiveness from Virk’s parents. Ellard, now known as Kerry Marie Sim, is still serving day parole and has given birth to two children while incarcerated.
Virk’s parents have dedicated their lives to speaking out against violence and bullying in schools, turning their tragedy into a mission to create a safer environment for young people. The series not only showcases the devastating impact of Virk’s murder on her family and the community but also serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of addressing and preventing such senseless acts of violence.
