General Motors (GM) has recently released its delivery numbers for the third quarter (Q3) and the results show a promising increase in electric vehicle (EV) sales. The company’s first Ultium vehicles, the Cadillac Lyriq and Hummer EV, saw a significant surge in deliveries, pointing towards a growing demand for electric cars.
However, despite the positive growth, the total number of EVs sold in Q3 accounted for just over 20,000 units. Although this signifies an improvement, it still represents a relatively small percentage of GM’s overall sales, which include non-EV vehicles.
Surprisingly, the leader in GM’s EV lineup remains the Bolt, which sold an impressive 15,835 units in Q3. This is noteworthy considering the Bolt is scheduled to be discontinued by the end of the year. Despite its impending discontinuation, the Bolt’s strong sales performance earned it the title of Electrek’s Vehicle of the Year.
GM has faced challenges with its Ultium vehicles in the past, but recent sales figures indicate a positive shift in momentum. Both the Hummer EV and the Cadillac Lyriq experienced record-breaking quarters in terms of deliveries.
In addition to these models, GM also managed to deliver a small number of the environmentally friendly Chevy Blazer EV and Silverado EV in Q3. This not only demonstrates GM’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle offerings, but also signifies the beginning of customer deliveries.
Although the Q3 results show an encouraging increase in EV sales for GM, it is important to note that the total number of 20,092 units still only represents a fraction of the company’s overall vehicle sales. GM’s EV sales are currently underperforming compared to the national average and are only slightly ahead of EV startup Rivian’s sales.
Looking ahead, GM will need to ramp up EV production in order to meet its goal of introducing 20 new EV models by 2023. Fulfilling its promise of being “all-in” on EVs requires continued efforts to improve sales and market share in the electric vehicle sector.
