Title: Microsoft Announces Deprecation of Windows Mixed Reality, Virtually Ending VR Ecosystem
In a recent announcement, tech giant Microsoft revealed its decision to deprecate Windows Mixed Reality, a virtual reality (VR) ecosystem built for Windows PCs. The feature, which has remained largely inactive over the past few years, is set to be removed in an upcoming release of the operating system.
Once touted as a promising step towards immersive virtual experiences, Windows Mixed Reality failed to gain significant traction in the market. As part of the deprecation, Microsoft will also discontinue support for Windows Mixed Reality devices, including VR headsets, in future versions of Windows. This move will also affect the compatibility of Windows Mixed Reality headsets with SteamVR.
Amidst these developments, HoloLens 2 stands as the only surviving “Windows Mixed Reality” device. However, even HoloLens 2 has faced its fair share of challenges in recent times. To further dampen hopes for VR enthusiasts, Microsoft currently has no plans to release a true successor to HoloLens 2. Notably, even Xbox, a prominent Microsoft subsidiary, has shown a lack of interest in the VR space.
The HP Reverb G2, released in 2019, remains the most recent addition to the Windows Mixed Reality headset lineup. Since then, no other original equipment manufacturer (OEM) has introduced new headsets, leaving the market stagnant. It is worth mentioning that some of the Windows Mixed Reality devices had gained recognition for their commendable quality and affordability, offering a viable option for VR enthusiasts.
With the deprecation of Windows Mixed Reality, it is evident that Microsoft has pivoted its focus away from immersive VR experiences. The shift in strategy emphasizes the company’s commitment to other technologies and innovations. As the VR landscape evolves, it remains to be seen whether alternative platforms will fill the gap left by the departure of Windows Mixed Reality, or if Microsoft will re-enter the VR domain with fresh offerings in the future.
