Minnesota Vikings Sign T.J. Hockenson to Contract Extension, Making Him Highest-Paid Tight End
The Minnesota Vikings have secured a contract extension with tight end T.J. Hockenson, keeping him with the team through 2027. Hockenson was initially set to become a free agent after this season, but the Vikings and his agent had been in discussions about an extension for some time, which finally reached a breakthrough during training camp.
Under the new deal, Hockenson’s contract has been extended by four years, with a potential value of $68.5 million. This lucrative agreement makes him the highest-paid tight end in the league, surpassing the Giants’ Darren Waller. The average yearly value of Hockenson’s contract is an impressive $17.125 million.
General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah expressed his confidence in reaching a deal, likening the negotiations to being in the “ninth inning.” The Vikings clearly prioritized retaining Hockenson, who quickly became quarterback Kirk Cousins’ second target in the 10 games he played with the team last season after being acquired from the Lions.
For Hockenson, this contract extension is not only financially rewarding but also allows him to play close to home. The Iowa native, who played college football at the University of Iowa, has expressed his excitement to remain with the Vikings long-term. The negotiation process was admittedly stressful for Hockenson, but now he can focus on the upcoming season.
Despite dealing with an ear infection and back stiffness during contract negotiations, Hockenson has returned to practice this week. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has confirmed his increased participation and expects him to be ready for the regular-season opener.
The announcement of Hockenson’s extension was made during a news conference where the Vikings discussed their initial 53-man roster. However, the team’s focus has quickly shifted towards securing a contract extension for star wide receiver Justin Jefferson. Talks are currently ongoing between the Vikings and Jefferson’s agents, with the general manager emphasizing their desire to keep Jefferson with the team for the long term.
With the signing of Hockenson to a record-breaking contract extension and ongoing negotiations with Jefferson, the Vikings are committed to building a strong offensive lineup to support their aspirations for the upcoming season.
