United Launch Alliance (ULA) CEO Tory Bruno and his wife Rebecca are set to make history as their DNA will be sent into space on the inaugural mission of the groundbreaking Vulcan Centaur rocket. This extraordinary mission is being organized by Celestis Inc., a memorial space burial company.
The Brunos’ DNA will be accompanied by the DNA of other individuals, as well as a collection of files, cremated remains, and DNA samples. Previous announcements have revealed the inclusion of DNA from notable figures in the space industry and even “Star Trek” luminaries. Now, the remains of four former U.S. presidents will also join this celestial voyage.
Dubbed the Enterprise mission, the Vulcan Centaur rocket is scheduled to take off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on December 24. The ULA, established in 2006 through a collaboration between Lockheed Martin Corp. and Boeing Co., is eagerly awaiting this historic launch.
Interestingly, the launch date holds a special significance for Tory and Rebecca Bruno. It coincides with their 38th wedding anniversary, making this celebration even more exceptional. The couple’s deep passion for space exploration and their careers as rocket scientists have undoubtedly paved the way for this remarkable opportunity.
In addition to its precious cargo of DNA and remains, the Vulcan Centaur rocket will carry Astrobotic’s Peregrine moon lander. Once separated from the upper stage, the stage will enter a heliocentric orbit and be appropriately renamed Enterprise Station, symbolizing the ambition to establish humankind’s outpost in the solar system.
This mission represents a profound step forward in the exploration of space. Not only is it an extraordinary tribute to individuals who have contributed to the space industry, but it also hints at the potential for long-term human habitation beyond Earth. As the Vulcan Centaur rocket embarks on its momentous journey, it ignites the fervent imagination of what lies beyond our terrestrial boundaries.
