Republican Attorney General Jeff Landry emerged victorious in the Louisiana governor’s race, marking a significant win for the GOP as they regain control of the governor’s mansion after a gap of eight years. Landry’s victory came as no surprise, as he garnered more than half of the votes, avoiding a runoff under the state’s “jungle primary” system.
Landry will replace the current Democratic governor, John Bel Edwards, who was unable to seek reelection due to term limits. Since taking office in 2016, Landry has raised the profile of attorney general and used his position to champion conservative policy positions. His involvement and support of controversial Louisiana laws have attracted attention and controversy.
Among the contentious laws Landry has backed are bans on gender-affirming medical care for transgender youths, a near-total abortion ban without exceptions for rape and incest, and a law restricting youths’ access to sexually explicit material in libraries. These positions have put him at odds with Governor Edwards on matters including LGBTQ rights, state finances, and the death penalty.
Furthermore, Landry has engaged in national fights, challenging President Biden’s policies that limit oil and gas production and COVID-19 vaccine mandates. His staunch conservative stance has earned him early endorsements from prominent Republicans, including former President Trump and Representative Steve Scalise, giving him a fundraising advantage throughout the race.
However, Landry has not been without his share of controversy. He faced political attacks from opponents and came under scrutiny for skipping major televised debates. Despite this, his supporters remained steadfast, emphasizing his track record and conservative values.
In addition to the governor’s race, several other races in Louisiana, including attorney general, state treasurer, and secretary of state, will be decided in a November runoff. However, hundreds of localized races, including Senate and House seats, featured a significant number of incumbents running unopposed.
Moving forward, Landry’s top priorities as governor will be addressing crime in urban areas, advocating for more transparency in the justice system, and supporting capital punishment. With his victory, Landry has signaled a shift in Louisiana’s political landscape, placing the state firmly in the hands of the Republican Party once again.
