A recent poll conducted by Yahoo News/YouGov revealed that cow’s milk still reigns supreme among U.S. adults, with 52% of respondents indicating that they still drink some type of milk occasionally. The poll, which surveyed 1,746 adults between April 11 and 15, also found that 31% of respondents rarely or never drink any type of milk.
When it comes to the type of milk consumed, whole milk and 2% cow’s milk were the top choices, preferred by 32% and 22% of respondents respectively. Surprisingly, only 9% of respondents opt for plant-based milk, with almond milk being the most favored among this group.
Dietitians expressed surprise at the continued popularity of cow’s milk over plant-based milk among adults. They noted that milk is a nutritional powerhouse due to its content of essential nutrients. However, some respondents avoid drinking milk due to taste preferences, allergies, or digestive issues like lactose intolerance.
While plant-based milks are considered good alternatives, they are not equal substitutes due to differences in protein content. Despite this, experts emphasize that milk is not essential for a well-balanced diet, as adults can get essential nutrients from sources other than milk. Milk can still provide valuable nutrients for those who choose to consume it for different purposes.
Overall, the poll highlighted the ongoing debate surrounding milk consumption and its alternatives. While cow’s milk remains a popular choice, it is important for individuals to consider their own dietary preferences and needs when selecting a type of milk to consume.
