Nationwide Dairy Recall Linked to Deadly Listeria Outbreak
In a major development, the nationwide dairy recall has been expanded to include products sold at renowned retailers such as Costco, Walmart, and others. The recall affects a wide range of food items including snack wraps, taco kits, salad kits, and other dairy-based products made by Rizo-López Foods, Inc.
This recall is an outcome of an ongoing investigation into a deadly listeria monocytogenes outbreak that has been under scrutiny since 2014. Shockingly, at least 26 people have already fallen ill, with 2 fatalities and 23 hospitalizations reported across 11 states, namely Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington.
Listeria monocytogenes is particularly dangerous, especially for children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. This bacterium is responsible for causing serious infections among them.
Symptoms of listeriosis generally manifest within two weeks after consuming contaminated food, which is why quick action is crucial. The recall was triggered by the detection of listeria monocytogenes in a sample of Rizo Bros Aged Cotija in January 2024. Responding promptly, Rizo-López Foods voluntarily recalled one batch of Rizo Bros Aged Cotija Mexican Grating Cheese to address this issue.
In December 2023, when new cases of illnesses were reported, both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reopened their investigation. Consequently, Rizo-López Foods took the proactive step of issuing a voluntary recall for its cheese, yogurt, and sour cream products in February 2024.
Moreover, consumers should be aware that the recalled dairy products and products made with them are sold under various brand names, including popular ones such as Trader Joe’s, Dole, and 365 Whole Foods Market. Retailers where these recalled products are available include Costco, Walmart, Save Mart, Lucky, Stater Bros. Markets, Fresh & Ready Foods, and Sprouts Farmers Market.
To ensure public safety, it is strongly advised not to consume, sell, or serve the recalled products. Proper disposal is essential. Additionally, individuals who suspect they may have symptoms of listeriosis should promptly seek medical assistance for diagnosis and treatment.
These steps are crucial in containing the outbreak and preventing further illness or casualties. Stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones.
