Cillian Murphy to Star in and Produce Film Adaptation of Blood Runs Coal
Irish actor Cillian Murphy, best known for his role in Oppenheimer, is set to star in and produce Blood Runs Coal, an upcoming film adaptation of the non-fiction book acquired by Universal. The film is based on the 2020 book Blood Runs Coal: The Yablonski Murders and the Battle for the United Mine Workers of America, which delves into the 1969 murder of mining union organizer Joseph “Jock” Yablonski.
Yablonski, along with his wife and daughter, were tragically killed at home after his campaign against a corrupt union leader shed light on shady dealings within the coal industry. The investigation into his murder uncovered a web of corruption that rocked the mining community.
John Davis and Jordan Davis will produce the film, with Murphy and Alan Moloney joining as producers via Big Things Films. Author Mark A. Bradley will also executive produce the project. The script for Blood Runs Coal will be adapted by Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth, known for their work on films such as Edge of Tomorrow, Spectre, and Ford v Ferrari.
In addition to his involvement in Blood Runs Coal, Murphy is also busy working on a sequel trilogy to the cult classic film 28 Days Later, as well as a Peaky Blinders movie following the conclusion of the popular period gangster TV series. The talented actor is represented by CAA, Lou Coulson Associates, and David Weber/Sloane Offer.
Fans of Murphy and the Butterworths can look forward to an exciting new project that promises to bring the gripping true story of Blood Runs Coal to life on the big screen. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated film.
