Headline: China Urges EU to Clarify Strategic Partnership Position Amid Growing Tensions
In a recent development, China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, has called on the European Union (EU) to clarify its stance on the long-standing strategic partnership between the two entities. The EU-China comprehensive strategic partnership, launched in 2003 with the aim of expanding beyond trade and investment, has been increasingly strained in recent years.
Since 2019, the EU has labeled China as an “economic competitor” and a “systemic rival,” casting doubts on the future of their partnership. The concerns were amplified following China’s close relations with Russia, particularly in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine. In response to this, Wang Yi has emphasized the need for China and the EU to strengthen communication, enhance mutual trust, and deepen cooperation.
Wang Yi firmly urged the EU not to waver in its position or encourage back-pedaling in both words and deeds. The EU’s commitment to reducing dependence on China was reiterated during last month’s summit, where leaders debated striking a balance between “de-risking” and cooperation, particularly in areas such as climate change.
The European Commission is additionally demanding stronger controls on exports and technology outflows, particularly for military use, by “countries of concern.” Wang Yi cautioned against the politicization of economic issues and the use of “de-risking” as a synonym for “decoupling,” emphasizing the absence of fundamental conflicts of interest between China and the EU.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell described his talks with Wang Yi as “constructive” and “in-depth,” highlighting the importance of managing EU-China relations effectively. Wang Yi expressed China’s support for a balanced and sustainable European security architecture, as well as efforts to seek a political settlement in Ukraine.
Furthermore, Borrell conveyed the EU’s expectations for China to play a role in ending Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and providing humanitarian assistance. The talks between Borrell and Wang Yi also touched upon the significance of preserving stability and the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.
As tensions between China and the EU continue to mount, it remains to be seen how both sides will navigate the future of their strategic partnership. Clarity of positions, strengthened communication, and trust-building measures are crucial for maintaining a constructive relationship between China and the EU.
