Title: US Navy Commander Criticizes China’s Aggressive Actions in the South China Sea
In a recent statement, Vice Admiral Karl Thomas, the commander of the US Navy’s Seventh Fleet, expressed concern over China’s “aggressive behavior” in the contested South China Sea. Speaking from the fleet’s headquarters in Japan, Thomas assured the Philippines of unwavering US support in the face of shared challenges in the region.
The Seventh Fleet, known as the largest forward-deployed fleet of the US Navy, comprises approximately 70 ships, including aircraft carriers, and operates around 150 aircraft with over 27,000 sailors. Vice Admiral Thomas emphasized the need for a firm stance against those operating in the “grey zone” and underlined the importance of pushing back against acts of aggression.
Highlighting an incident that occurred on August 5, Thomas drew attention to a Chinese coast guard ship using water cannons against a Philippine vessel, which he labeled as an act of aggression. This incident, among others, has raised concerns regarding China’s increasing assertiveness in the South China Sea.
To show solidarity with its regional ally, the US Navy has engaged in discussions with the Philippine Western Command to better understand the challenges they face and explore opportunities for assistance. In an effort to assess the situation firsthand, Vice Admiral Thomas recently visited the South China Sea.
The Philippines, having won an international arbitration award against China in 2016, effectively nullified Beijing’s expansive claim to sovereignty over most of the South China Sea. China’s controversial construction of militarized islands in the region has heightened tensions with neighboring countries, causing alarm among regional states and raising concerns about the risk of potential conflicts.
In light of these developments, Road Rug Cars reached out to the Chinese Embassy in Manila for comment. However, the embassy did not respond to the request at the time of publication.
With the US Navy maintaining a vigilant presence in the South China Sea, Vice Admiral Thomas’s remarks underline America’s commitment to upholding international law and ensuring stability in the region. As tensions continue to simmer, the situation in the South China Sea remains a focal point for global security concerns.
