Title: US Urges Israel to Shift Tactics in Gaza Conflict Amid Concerns of Rising Casualties
In a recent development, the Biden administration has called upon Israel to reduce its extensive ground and air military campaign in Gaza and instead focus on more targeted operations against the Hamas organization. Expressing concerns over what it termed as “indiscriminate bombing,” the United States warned Israel about the potential loss of international support.
During his visit to Israel, Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser to President Joe Biden, engaged in discussions with members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet and other Israeli officials. The meetings addressed the urgent need for a “shift in emphasis” towards more precise and carefully targeted military operations against Hamas.
While no specific deadline has been demanded by the US, Israeli officials have reportedly briefed their American counterparts about possible timeframes for a reduction of military operations. However, any decision made by Israel will be contingent upon the existing “conditions on the ground.”
The growing criticism from the Biden administration regarding Israel’s conduct in its ongoing conflict with Hamas stems from the escalating number of Palestinian civilian casualties. President Biden has stressed the paramount importance of minimizing civilian loss of life and has called for Israel to exercise caution in its actions, without relenting in its efforts to combat Hamas.
Beyond addressing the immediate conflict, President Biden has expressed his support for a “two-state solution” for both Israel and the Palestinians. However, a notable point of contention arises from Netanyahu’s opposition to involving the Palestinian Authority in Gaza’s affairs after the current war concludes.
In addition to his visit to Israel, Sullivan also traveled to Saudi Arabia and is scheduled to head to the West Bank for a meeting with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. These diplomatic engagements highlight the administration’s commitment to engaging with all relevant stakeholders in an effort to bring about a resolution.
As the situation in Gaza remains tense, the Biden administration’s appeal for a change in Israel’s military tactics reflects its ongoing efforts to prioritize the protection of civilians and promote a pathway towards lasting peace in the region.
