Writers at Sesame Workshop Vote to Authorize Strike
The writers at the Sesame Workshop have made a bold move by unanimously voting to authorize a strike against the nonprofit organization. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) announced that there was 100% participation in the strike-authorization vote from the 35-member bargaining unit. The writers are prepared to walk the picket line if a tentative deal isn’t reached by Friday, when the current contract expires.
The potential strike would include any and all work for Sesame Street, a beloved children’s program known for its educational and entertaining content. The WGA Sesame Workshop Negotiating Committee stated that the writers are deeply committed to their work and are focused on storytelling that aligns with the Workshop’s mission.
Negotiations for the new contract began on February 13, with the new contract proposal including annual raises, improvements to residuals, and union coverage for animation and social media segments. If a strike were to happen, picketing will begin on April 24 outside Sesame Workshop’s offices in New York City.
A Sesame Workshop spokesperson stated that they are engaged in good faith negotiations with the WGA and are hopeful for an agreement before the current contract expires. However, WGAE President Lisa Takeuchi Cullen expressed concern about the potential picket line on Sesame Street, questioning why the company would ignore its own messages of kindness and fairness.
As the deadline looms, both sides are working towards a resolution to avoid a strike that could disrupt the production of Sesame Street and impact the team of dedicated writers behind the show. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
