The NCAA recently admitted to a human error in incorrectly measuring the 3-point lines at the women’s basketball tournament site in Portland, Oregon. The mistake was made by courts produced by Connor Sports, the contractor responsible for finishing the court.
The error occurred when the hole at the center of the court used to place the net was punched in the wrong spot, leading to inaccuracies with the arc of the 3-point line. The NCAA quickly corrected the issue overnight by painting over the incorrect lines and repainting them correctly.
The mistake was only noticed right before the Elite Eight game between Texas and NC State, when an eagle-eyed fan in attendance pointed it out. The NCAA issued an apology for the error and promised to establish additional quality control measures with suppliers and vendors.
Despite the mishap, the games continued at the Portland location, with UConn set to face USC in the final game for a trip to the Final Four. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of attention to detail in sports events and the need for rigorous quality control measures to prevent such errors in the future.
