Illinois Measles Outbreak Raises Concerns for Wisconsin Residents
Illinois is currently facing a measles outbreak with 12 confirmed cases in Chicago, sparking concerns for neighboring Wisconsin residents. Ascension Wisconsin pediatrician Margaret Hennessy is closely monitoring the situation and preparing her team in case the virus spreads to Wisconsin.
While over 80% of people in Milwaukee County and nearly 70% statewide are vaccinated, measles is highly contagious and can linger in the air even after an infected person has left. Hennessy fears that the virus could easily make its way to Wisconsin, especially if individuals continue to refuse vaccinations.
Hennessy advises residents to check their vaccination status and be vigilant for symptoms such as cough, runny nose, fever, and a distinct rash that typically starts around the hairline behind the ears and spreads downward. Children’s Wisconsin is also on high alert for suspect cases, with clinicians closely monitoring the rising cases across the country.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends getting vaccinated at least two weeks before traveling to help prevent the spread of measles. The last confirmed case of measles in Milwaukee was reported back in October 2023, but the recent outbreak in Chicago serves as a reminder of the importance of staying up to date with vaccinations to protect against potentially deadly diseases. Stay informed, stay protected.
