President Biden Orders U.S. Military to Set Up Temporary Port for Aid Delivery to Gaza
President Joe Biden has directed the U.S. military to establish a temporary port off the coast of Gaza to provide aid to Palestinian civilians affected by the ongoing Hamas-Israel conflict. Despite reaffirming his support for Israel, President Biden has called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to allow more aid into Gaza and ensure the safety of humanitarian workers.
The decision to set up a temporary port comes as Gaza faces near-famine conditions and efforts to reach a cease-fire before Ramadan have stalled. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has resulted in severe food shortages, with reports of children dying of starvation.
To facilitate aid delivery without deploying troops on the ground, U.S. officials are considering using a floating pier known as JLOTS. Additionally, other countries such as Cyprus and the United Arab Emirates are also working on aid deliveries to Gaza.
Despite challenges in coordinating with Israel and ongoing hostilities, the Biden administration is determined to get aid into Gaza. Mediators are working on a cease-fire agreement between Hamas and Israel, but disagreements persist on the terms of the deal.
Israel has rejected Hamas’ demands for an end to the conflict and Prime Minister Netanyahu has vowed to continue the offensive until achieving “total victory.” The situation remains tense as efforts to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continue amidst the ongoing conflict.
