Title: Deadly Outbreak of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Linked to Travelers from Mexico
In a recent outbreak of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) in southern California, three individuals have tragically lost their lives. The outbreak has been directly linked to five reported cases, all of whom had recently traveled to or resided in the city of Tecate in Mexico. The patients were diagnosed in hospitals across southern California between July and December 2023.
Of the five reported cases, three were residents of the United States, while the remaining two were residents of Mexico. RMSF is a severe and often deadly disease transmitted by infected ticks. It is endemic in northern Mexican states bordering the U.S., as well as certain parts of the southwestern U.S.
Concerns have been raised over the potential for ticks carrying RMSF to cross into the U.S. through the country’s porous borders, particularly given the high volume of migration. The bacteria responsible for the fever, Rickettsia rickettsii, are primarily spread by brown dog ticks.
Common symptoms of RMSF include fever, headache, rash, abdominal pain, muscle aches, and swelling. Prompt treatment is crucial for a successful recovery, especially for young children under the age of 10 who are particularly vulnerable to the disease’s fatal effects.
Health care providers are now being urged to consider RMSF in their evaluations of patients with fever who have recently been in northern Mexico. The standard treatment for RMSF is the antibiotic doxycycline. It is worth noting that the fatality rate of the disease in Mexico exceeds 40%.
In advanced stages, RMSF can lead to mental disorientation, coma, organ damage, and respiratory decline. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends reporting all cases to local health departments and seeking immediate medical attention for individuals experiencing symptoms after traveling to a city in northern Mexico.
To prevent the spread of RMSF, it is essential to treat dogs with insect repellent, wear protective clothing while outdoors, and thoroughly check for ticks after outdoor activities. These prevention methods can significantly reduce the risk of contracting the disease.
As health officials work to contain and mitigate the outbreak, the focus remains on raising awareness, prompt diagnosis, and providing the appropriate treatment to prevent further fatalities.
