ED Officer Arrested in Tamil Nadu on Bribery Charges
In a shocking turn of events, an Enforcement Directorate (ED) officer named Ankit Tiwari has been arrested in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, on bribery charges. Tiwari allegedly took bribes from a government doctor, Dr T Suresh Babu, in exchange for reopening an old assets case.
According to reports, Tiwari claimed that he had been instructed by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to conduct an inquiry and that the cash he received was intended for his superiors. However, investigations revealed that these claims were false.
The conversations between Tiwari and Babu were recorded on a camera inside Babu’s car, providing solid evidence against the corrupt officer. Subsequently, Tiwari has been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act based on a complaint filed by Dr T Suresh Babu.
Initially, Tiwari demanded a staggering Rs 3 crore from Babu. However, after negotiations, they eventually settled on a sum of Rs 51 lakh. This incident raises serious questions about the extent of corruption prevalent within government institutions.
The arrest took place after Tiwari was caught with Rs 20 lakh during a highway drama. In light of this arrest, Tiwari has been remanded in judicial custody until December 15, awaiting further investigation and legal proceedings.
Following Tiwari’s arrest, the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) conducted searches at the ED’s Madurai office. These searches were described as rare instances of DVAC action taking place at a Union government entity.
In a significant development, the DVAC claimed to have seized incriminating documents from the ED office, further solidifying the case against Tiwari. It was discovered that Tiwari had used details of corruption cases registered by the DVAC to extort money from accused individuals.
Remarkably, the DVAC had previously investigated Dr T Suresh Babu in a disproportionate wealth case back in 2018. However, Babu was later cleared of any wrongdoing.
This arrest highlights the urgent need to tackle corruption within the ranks of government agencies. It also serves as a reminder that the fight against corruption requires constant vigilance and thorough investigations. The authorities must work towards creating a system that ensures transparency and integrity, thereby safeguarding the interests of the public.
