SpaceX’s satellite-based internet service, Starlink, is set to expand its offerings with a new cell phone service called “Starlink Direct to Cell.” The news was revealed on Starlink’s website, which recently underwent an update.
The new service aims to provide “ubiquitous coverage” through “cellphone towers in space.” Unlike current satellite phone connectivity, which requires bulky hardware, Starlink Direct to Cell promises to bring space connectivity to normal smartphone hardware, without the need for any changes to hardware, firmware, or special apps.
Starlink operates in a lower orbit compared to other networks, making it easier for smartphones to connect to their satellites. The development of SpaceX’s Starship rocket, the world’s largest, will enable the launch of bigger satellites equipped with larger and more sensitive antennas.
The rollout of the service will take place in multiple stages. Starting in 2024, Starlink Direct to Cell will offer text service, followed by voice and data in 2025, and finally “Internet of Things” (IoT) service also in 2025. The initial speed of the service is expected to be around 2-4Mbps.
The launch timeline, however, may be subject to potential delays in the development of Starship. Currently, several traditional cell phone companies, including T-Mobile, Rodgers, KDDI, Optus, One NZ, and Salt, have already lined up to sell the service. Additionally, Starlink is actively seeking more cellular partners to expand its reach.
With the promise of bringing space connectivity to smartphones without requiring any additional hardware, Starlink Direct to Cell has the potential to revolutionize the way cell phone services are delivered. Customers can look forward to seamless connectivity and “ubiquitous coverage” as they rely on “cellphone towers in space.” Stay tuned for further updates on the launch of this exciting new service from Starlink.
